Parliament dismisses interim President of Peru, less than two months before new elections

By 75 votes in favor, 24 against and three abstentions, Peru’s parliament approved the dismissal of the current interim president, José Jeri. The politician from the right-wing party “Somos Perú” faces two investigations into alleged influence trafficking. The motion of censure followed a scandal involving alleged unofficial meetings with Chinese businesspeople.

With this dismissal, the Andean country has the eighth presidential change in almost a decade. The last few years have been marked by political instability, since the 2016 elections. The country has elections scheduled in less than two months.

This Wednesday, February 18, the assembly will elect a new president of parliament, who will automatically assume the interim presidency of Peru. The transitional presidency ends on July 28, when the head of state elected in April will take office.

José Jerí, 39, had taken office in October 2025, when President Dina Boluarte was impeached. Boluarte, in turn, had taken office in 2022, when Pedro Castillo was impeached after a year and a half in office as President.
