Pedro Amaral Jorge assumes leadership of the Iberian Electricity Market

Pedro Amaral Jorge, who was president of the Portuguese Renewable Energy Association (APREN) for eight years, will lead the central institutions of the Iberian Electricity Market, assuming the presidency of the Iberian Market Operator, it was announced this Monday, 16.

“The Governments of Portugal and Spain gave the ‘green light’ to the name of Pedro Amaral Jorge for the presidency of the Iberian Market Operator (OMIP and OMIE), following his election by the Iberian shareholders of the Iberian Market (OMI)”, said the Ministry of Environment and Energy, in a statement.

The previously president of APREN will, from now on, lead these institutions “central to the functioning of the Iberian Electricity Market (MIBEL), responsible for electricity trading platforms in the spot and forward markets”, according to the authority.

The Minister of Environment and Energy, Maria da Graça Carvalho, defended, quoted in a statement, that “the market operators OMIP and OMIE are essential instruments for the deepening of a true European electricity market, allowing companies and citizens to benefit from increasingly competitive electricity prices”.

The election of Pedro Amaral Jorge is “great news that demonstrates the reinforcement of the role of market operators at the center of the evolution of the energy system”, he added.

APREN announced today that Pedro Amaral Jorge would leave the presidency of the association after eight years, and the new leadership has not yet been announced, so the normal functioning of the institution will be ensured by the management and its team.

The person responsible was also vice-president of the European Renewable Energies Federation, vice-president of the Energy Council of the Portuguese Business Confederation, vice-president of the Portuguese Energy Association, executive member of the Board of Directors of the Training Center for Energy Transition and executive member of the Board of Directors of the Lusófona Renewable Energies Association.
