The biggest surprise, or perhaps not so much, is that we don’t know the current State manager from the Government; the Ministry of Education, the entity responsible for Elementary and Secondary Education; or from the parties, which represent citizens in Parliament, any proposal to mitigate this injustice.
Here is a suggestion, addressed to Minister Fernando Alexandre: the creation of financial support (why not even in fiscal terms?) so that parents of young people who do not have classes due to a lack of teachers can pay for tutoring in subjects that public education has neglected.
Call it a “cheque-explanation”, call it a patch, call it anything, but don’t let Education fall into the same situation as Health, where many citizens can only obtain timely care from private entities, through insurance or by paying the list price. Or to the field of Justice, where a full portfolio guarantees the hiring of the best lawyers and the passage of time allows you to assert in Justice rights that the most deprived only dream of.
One last reason to decisively attack this inequality in schools. Education is precisely the best social tool to break this cycle that perpetuates or creates new hierarchies, new poverty and new exclusion.
