António José Seguro replaces Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, who has been president of the Portuguese Republic for the last ten years.
The socialist is considered a moderate. It is not yet known whether the new president will have as close a relationship with Brazil as his predecessor, who made nine official trips to the country, but he must maintain the fraternal relationship between the two nations.
