The March 14th and 15th sports calendar offers one of those weekends where several sports intersect at decisive moments in the season. Between a European final with Portugal, high-level cycling in Italy, Formula 1 in Asia and relevant Portuguese league games, there are more than enough reasons to make time for sport.
The biggest highlight, naturally, goes to rugby. The Portuguese team will play the final of the Rugby Europe Championship against Georgia. The match will be played in Madrid, at the Ontime Butarque Stadium, starting at 5:45 pm (Lisbon time). Portugal reached this decision after beating Spain 26-7 in the semi-final, in a game in which Rodrigo Marta and Domingos Cabral were in the spotlight. Georgia is historically the powerhouse in this competition, but the “Lobos” have shown in recent years that they can compete with the best European teams outside the Six Nations. The final is more than a game: it is also a test for the growth of Portuguese rugby following the positive impact of the 2023 World Cup.
In cycling, the weekend coincides with the outcome of the Tirreno-Adriatico, one of the most important stage races at the start of the European season. The Italian race ends on Sunday, March 15, in San Benedetto del Tronto, after a last stage between Civitanova Marche and that city on the Adriatic coast, normally favorable to sprinters. The 2026 edition brought some new features to the route: more kilometers of climbing – around 15,500 meters accumulated, more than last year -, but without a major finish on a high mountain. Instead, the route focuses on medium-mountain stages and explosive finals that promise small differences and more open races.
In motorsport, attention turns to Formula 1, which competes in the Chinese Grand Prix on the Shanghai circuit. The main race takes place on Sunday, March 15th and is the second race of the season. This is also the first weekend with the format sprint in 2026: on Saturday the sprint and the starting grid for the main race is decided. After the opening of the championship in Australia, this race begins to reveal who is really prepared to fight for the title in a championship marked by new technical rules and greater electrification of single-seaters.
Finally, in football, the Primeira Liga also has matches that deserve attention. Benfica goes to Arouca on Saturday, March 14, in one of those traditionally uncomfortable away games. FC Porto hosts Moreirense on Sunday, March 15th. These are matches that appear at a stage of the season in which each point begins to weigh on the classification and in which the fight for the top places in the table enters its most demanding phase. This is a weekend that offers several reasons not to forget about sport.
