Electric cars represent 9% of the vehicle fleet in Portugal in 2026

The Portuguese vehicle fleet aged less in 2026, as the proportion of vehicles less than four years old rose five percentage points compared to 2025, according to the ACP Observatory – Electric Mobility in Portugal 2026.

At the same time, 38% of cars are over 15 years old, a reduction of five percentage points.

Electrified vehicles now represent 9% of the automotive universe, an increase of 5.5 percentage points. Gasoline gained share (+11 pp), while diesel cars fell 18 pp

The French brands Peugeot and Renault remain in the lead, each with 10% of the park, followed by Volkswagen (7%), BMW (6%) and Opel (6%).

More than 80% of respondents drive their own car — an increase of 10 pp — and 79% travel up to 1,000 km per month, a figure that increased by 20 pp

As for financing, 57% purchased the vehicle in cash and 22% used vehicle credit. Cash buyers predominate among drivers over 65 years old, from the Lisbon, Oeste and Tagus Valley region, and from social class A.

Almost half of Portuguese people admit to changing their car between one and five years (an increase of 25 pp). In purchasing preferences, 21% would choose an electric vehicle, 20% a plug‑in hybrid, 19% a diesel, 19% a gasoline engine and 10% a simple hybrid.

The average is 1.8 cars per household, a slight drop compared to 2025.

Among owners of electrified vehicles, 82% have owned the car for less than five years, with Tesla and BMW standing out. In terms of charging, 86% charge at home (3 pp more) and 91% use public payphones (3 pp more).

Also according to the report, the domestic cost per charge is up to seven euros and the monthly expenditure on public charging is around 50 euros. Galp Electric and EDP were named as the main suppliers.

According to ACP, 1,608 people participated in the study (1,200 with a driving license plus an additional 408 drivers of electrified vehicles) between January 28 and February 11, 2026.
