Coming down the Cordova Street hill near downtown Anchorage, the Iditarod mushers and their dog teams raced toward the city’s trail system. At the bottom of the hill, dozens of people were waiting to cheer them on, with Bloody Marys and hot chocolate in hand.
The Bootie Alley party has been held here for 18 years. While the sleigh drivers, known as mushersand their teams of twelve dogs each whizzed by, the spectators shouting, “Loot, loot, loot,” in the hope that they would throw the dogs’ loot into the crowd.
