Fishing vessel with 1.8 tons of cocaine seized

The Civil Police announced this Wednesday, March 11, the carrying out of a police operation that allowed the seizure of around 1800 kilos of cocaine. The drug was on board a fishing vessel detected 450 nautical miles from the Azores.

Authorities believe they have dismantled a criminal group dedicated to introducing large quantities of drugs onto the European continent.

In conjunction with the Navy and the Air Force, the PJ’s National Unit to Combat Drug Trafficking approached the vessel “in extreme conditions of difficulty”, having found in it, in addition to the drugs, eight men – four of Brazilian nationality, three Surinamese and one Dutch.

“Several objects used in the navigation and transportation process of cocaine were also seized”, says the PJ about this operation, which took place in recent days and was named “Survivor”.

“In view of the evidence collected, with the collaboration of the DIC of the Azores of the PJ and in conjunction with the DIAP of Ponta Delgada, several investigative steps were taken to collect evidence, with a view to stopping the illicit activity that they had been developing during the last few days”, adds the statement, which concludes by saying that the investigation continues.
