Khamenei, 86, was killed on February 28 in a US-Israeli bombing that sparked the war that is spreading across the Middle East and beyond, and raising fears of a global energy crisis.
In the last week, several names circulated for that position, reserved for a religious person, including that of his son, Mojtaba Khamenei, 56 years old, considered one of the most influential personalities.

Trump already disqualified Mojtaba Khamenei during the week stating that he is a “lightweight”.
“You will have to get our approval”Trump told ABC News. “If you don’t get it, you won’t last long.”
In any case, Israel has already announced that the new leader will be “a target”, after the attack that ended the life of the ayatollah who had been in charge of Iran since 1989.
During the day, a thick cloud of smoke covered Tehran in darkness after Israel hit oil depots.
“The air became unbreathable,” said a 35-year-old Tehran resident. “At first, I supported this war. After Khamenei’s death I celebrated with my friends.”
“But since yesterday (…) people say that there is not even gasoline left in the service stations,” he said.
This attack – which left four dead – was the first reported against oil infrastructure since the start of the war.
According to the latest report from the Iranian Ministry of Health, more than 1,200 people were killed and more than 10,000 civilians were injured. AFP was unable to verify these figures.
