The secretary general of the PS, José Luís Carneiro, defended on Friday, March 6, that the government must “prepare a plan to mitigate the effects” of the war in Iran on fuel, food and mortgage loan costs.
“The Government must prepare a plan to mitigate the effects of this war in the Middle East, which not only has an effect on fuel, but can also have an effect on reducing the cost of food and the cost of housing loans,” he told journalists at the entrance to a meeting with activists to present the re-candidacy for PS secretary-general, in Lagoa, on the island of São Miguel, in the Azores.
The socialist leader warned that “economic circumstances will worsen in the near future” due to the international situation and considered the reduction of the Tax on Petroleum Products (ISP) a “meager measure in its effects”.
“The measure that the government announced to reduce the ISP by 13 cents corresponds to the increase it just made at the end of December. The government really has to say whether or not it wants to take decisions that have concrete effects on reducing the ISP”, he declared.
