The president of the United States, Donald Trump, once again placed Cuba at the center of the geopolitical debate by stating that the island’s government “is going to fall very soon”, statements that occur in the midst of the military offensive that the United States and Israel maintain against Iran.
The statements were issued during an interview with CNN, where the US president suggested that, once the military campaign in Iranian territory is over, his administration could focus its strategy towards the Caribbean island.
“Cuba is going to fall very soon,” stated the president, assuring that the Havana government “very much wants” to reach an agreement with Washington.
CUBA, POSSIBLE NEXT STRATEGIC OBJECTIVE
During the interview, Trump explained that he has commissioned Secretary of State Marco Rubio to explore possible channels of dialogue with actors linked to the Cuban government.
According to the president, his team has detected interest on the island in starting negotiations with the United States, although he clarified that, for now, the White House’s priority continues to focus on the conflict with Iran.
“Cuba is ready, after 50 years,” said Trump, who added that his government has “plenty of time” to address the bilateral relationship once the international scenario stabilizes.
The statements rekindle the historical tension between Washington and Havana, marked by decades of economic sanctions, ideological confrontation and episodes of diplomatic détente.
CONTEXT: OFFENSIVE IN IRAN
The president’s words come while the United States and Israel maintain a military operation against Iran that is now in its seventh day. During the initial attacks, Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was killed, along with members of the country’s political and military leadership.
Trump described the military campaign as “successful” and announced that, once concluded, his administration could redirect its strategic attention to other international scenarios.
A day earlier, the president had indicated that the Cuban government would be “desperate” to reach an immediate agreement with Washington.
VENEZUELA AND THE REGIONAL BALANCE
In statements to the media Político, Trump also stated that the eventual fall of the Cuban government would be “the icing on the cake” after the operation carried out in January in which the United States captured the Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro, one of Havana’s main allies.
The president even described as “wonderful” the cooperation with the interim government headed by Delcy Rodríguez in Venezuela, with which Washington recently announced the reestablishment of diplomatic relations.
DISCREET CONTACTS WITH HAVANA
In parallel, US media reported preliminary contacts between Marco Rubio and Raúl Guillermo Rodríguez Castro, grandson of former president Raúl Castro.
According to those reports, the talks explore possible gradual economic reforms in Cuba and an eventual phased reduction of US sanctions.
However, the sources cited by the media clarify that these are only exploratory approaches, not formal negotiations between both parties.
