Twelve people died in the collapse of a nursing home in Belo Horizonte, in the southeast of Brazil, according to the toll released on Friday by firefighters after closing the search efforts.
The collapse occurred early Thursday morning in the four-story building, which in addition to the residence housed some homes and an aesthetic clinic.
Of the 29 people who were in the building at the time of the collapse, nine managed to get out on their own with the help of neighbors, and another eight were rescued alive by firefighters and taken to area hospitals.
Among those rescued was a two-year-old boy, who was taken out conscious and with stable vital signs.
The causes of the collapse are being investigated, although according to the first investigations the building had the permits in order.
More than 40 firefighters, with the support of trained dogs, participated in the search efforts.
Among them, teams arrived from the city of Juiz de Fora, also located in the state of Minas Gerais, where landslides caused by torrential rains left 65 dead last week.
