Internal Security System discusses repercussions of the conflict in the Middle East in Portugal

The Security Coordinating Office of the Internal Security System (SSI) met this morning, March 3, to assess the “potential repercussions on internal security” in Portugal due to the conflicts in the Middle East. The meeting was extraordinary in nature and was chaired by the Secretary General of the Internal Security System, Patrícia Barão.

During the work, an overview of the current geopolitical situation was presented and preventive measures considered appropriate in the international context were analyzed”, reads a note sent to newsrooms. However, they did not detail the prevention measures adopted. The DN asked the SSI what these measures were and is awaiting a response.

At the meeting “the level of protection of critical infrastructures, border control and the safeguarding of maritime, air and cyberspace” were discussed. A state-of-the-art overview of the current geopolitical framework was also presented.

The statement highlights that the “Security Coordinating Office will maintain permanent monitoring, ensuring the adoption of appropriate measures to safeguard internal security and public tranquility.” In total, 20 entities participated in the meeting.

From the Government, there were six representatives: Paulo Rangel, Minister of Foreign Affairs (MNE), António Leitão Amaro, Minister of the Presidency, Luís Neves, Minister of Internal Administration (MAI) and Miguel Pinto Luz, Minister of Infrastructure and Housing. The Ministry of Defense and Justice sent representatives.

Also present were the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, General Cartaxo Alves, in addition to the Information System of the Portuguese Republic, the President of the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority, the National Maritime Authority, the National Aeronautical Authority, the top leaders of the National Republican Guard, the Public Security Police, the Judiciary Police, the Maritime Police, the Security Information Service, the Strategic Defense Information Service, the National Authority for Civil Aviation, the General Directorate of Reinsertion and Prison Services and the National Cybersecurity Center.
