Bombing reported in Assembly where new leader of Iran was elected

This Tuesday it was reported that Israeli and US air forces bombed the building housing the office of the Assembly of Experts on Leadership, located in Quom, about 87 miles south of Tehran.

Official Iranian sources indicated that the attack was carried out while the assembly was preparing for the succession process of the supreme leader, after the death of Ali Khamenei, according to the US agency The Washington Post.

On the other hand, the Iranian Tasnim agency reported that the headquarters was the target of the attack, as it is a key organ in Iran’s theocratic political structure.

The Assembly of Experts is made up of some 88 elected clerics and has the constitutional authority to select the new Supreme Leader, the highest religious and political authority in the Islamic Republic.

The damage to infrastructure and Assembly personnel has not yet been officially confirmed, so it is unknown if there were any victims.

The bombing at this headquarters marks an escalation in the conflict between the United States and Israel against Iran, which has already claimed the life of the supreme leader, a fact to which Iran responded with missile and drone attacks against Israeli and American bases and cities in the region.

For their part, multilateral organizations and European governments have called for emergency consultations to address the crisis, while calls for calm and avoiding a major war persist.
