This Monday, March 2, Benfica achieved its fourth consecutive victory in the I Liga, something that had not happened until now, by beating Gil Vicente, in Barcelos, 2-1.

A triumph achieved thanks to a beautiful goal from Schjelderup in the second half, which keeps the distance to its rivals as a very important round approaches for the outcome of the championship.

The Gilistas entered the game better, imposing difficulties on the Reds who were unable to connect their moves.

However, despite a couple of shots from the home team, it was José Mourinho’s team that created the first big opportunity of the match in the 18th minute with a shot from Rafa Silva, after a pass from Pavlidis, which goalkeeper Lucão saved with his feet.

From that moment on, Benfica gained control of the game, taking the lead in the 35th minute, following a corner kick from Aursnes which was taken advantage of by António Silva to head the ball into the back of the goal, marking the 100th game with an eagle on his chest with his first goal of the season.

Soon after, a good cross from Samuel Dahl that Pavlidis deflected onto the bar.

The second half started with Gil Vicente trying everything to reach a draw, putting Benfica back in their area. And it was following the departure of Aursnes due to injury, that the team coached by César Peixoto managed to equalize in the 52nd minute through Spaniard Héctor Hernández, deflecting a low cross from Santí García.

Soon after, Trubin prevented the turnaround by saving a header from Héctor Hernández.

Just like in the first half, the red-blacks once again took control of the game and pressed in an attempt to regain the advantage on the scoreboard, which ended up reaching the 73rd minute with a left-footed shot, with no chance for goalkeeper Lucão.

With this triumph, Benfica maintains three points behind Sporting and seven behind FC Porto, and next week they will host the Dragons and, in case of victory, they could rekindle their hope of reaching the title.
