Passos Coelho suggests agreement between PSD, Chega and Liberal Initiative for political stability

Former prime minister and social democratic leader Pedro Passos Coelho defended, in an interview with ECOwhich “Most likely” Chega and not the PS will be the party with the most votes if the PSD loses the next legislative elections.

“It is the party that is closest to being able to aspire to garner any discontent that may be generated by the exercise of government power, even if the President of the Republic is from the socialist area”, said the former Prime Ministerwhich last week shook the Government of Luís Montenegro with a succession of public interventions in which he left criticisms that ranged from the “serious precedent” of the choice of Luís Neves for the Ministry of Internal Administration to the suggestion that the AD should seek to reinforce itself in new elections if the opposition joins together to reject changes in labor legislation.

In the interview with ECO, Passos Coelho argues that, after the “modest result” in the 2025 legislative elections, his former parliamentary leader should have sought to reach a regime agreement with Chega and the Liberal Initiative. “The Government could have chosen to find a framework that could potentially be more stable from the outset. I don’t know if it would be possible, but only when we try do we know. What would be expected is that this framework could be negotiated within what we call the parliamentary right, because the country has turned to the right and there is a large majority in Parliament”, he said.

Reaffirming that he is not applying for “anything”, Passos Coelho said that he sees no reason to “dissimulate” any intentions in this regard. “When I want to apply, I apply, and I announce that I’m going to apply,” he said, adding that those who don’t feel “the need to chase anything”, but also don’t feel “the need to exclude anything they may do in the future.
