Mexican migrant dies in ICE custody in California

UNITED STATES.- A Mexican died in the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in a processing center in the city of Adelanto, in the state of California, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) reported this Monday.

According to reports, the man was identified as Alberto Gutierrez Reyes, mexican migrant 48 years old from Veracruzwho was at the Processing Center located in Advancement, California.

Gutierrez Reyes migrated to the United States in 2001 and he dedicated himself to work in the construction. His wife reported that he was detained on January 9 in the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles and later taken to a migrant detention center. Where they denied him medical attention after presenting health problems related to the extreme cold and the conditions of the place of detention.

Consular protocol activated due to death of Mexican in ICE custody

The SRE reported that The consular attention protocol was activated after the death of a Mexican in the custody of the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service (ICE).

In a bulletin, the Foreign Ministry headed by Juan Ramón de la Fuente detailed that the compatriot was in ICE custody at the Processing Center in Adelanto, California.

“An immediate and exhaustive investigation will be required into the conditions that have led to the death of fellow citizens in the custody of this authority, in order to determine responsibilities and guarantee that these events are not repeated,” he assured.

Among the demands, he formally requested the medical record, the custody reports and “all the elements that allow us to fully clarify what happened.”

According to the Foreign Ministry, Consulate Protection personnel have provided “close and permanent” support to the family of the Mexican citizen.

Finally, the federal agency assured that attention to this type of situations and the establishment of ways to resolve them are a priority for the Federal Government. In that sense, he highlighted that the Foreign Ministry will formally request the investigation of the systemic conditions that have led to “events as regrettable as this one.”
