Half a year after the Glória elevator derailment in Lisbon, support processes for victims and their family members continue to be developed by Carris’ insurance company, Fidelidadewhich indicated that compensation agreements have already been signed. “The processes are currently at different stages of regularization, depending on the nature and clinical evolution of each situation: in some cases, compensation agreements have already been signed; in others, the receipt of legally necessary documentation is awaited to formulate a compensation proposal.”indicated an official Fidelidade source, in response to the Lusa agency.
The Glória elevator, much sought after by tourists in the center of Lisbon, derailed on September 3rd. One of the two cabins collided violently against a buildingcausing 16 deaths and more than 20 injuries, among Portuguese and foreigners of various nationalities.
Six months after the accident, an official Fidelidade source said that “40 victims were recorded in total”, specifically 16 deaths and 24 injuries, and highlighted that “active and permanent monitoring remains” to the victims and their families, “ensuring the settlement of the claim in accordance with applicable legal terms”.
The insurer added that, “in several situations relating to victims with bodily injuries”, the process is “still in the medical-legal consolidation phase”, and it is necessary to wait for clinical stabilization for the definitive assessment of possible disabilities and subsequent compensation calculation. “In respect for the privacy and protection of victims’ personal and clinical data, Fidelidade does not comment on individual situations”he added.
Without providing concrete data on the support already provided to the victims, the insurer said that, to date, the duly proven charges that fall within the applicable coverage have been insured and settled. These are: medical, hospital, pharmaceutical expenses, travel, repatriation, funeral services and other expenses resulting from the accident.
Fidelidade also announced that it will also proceed reimbursement of costs from other insurers that have advanced expenses under health insurance contractswork accidents or travel insurance, with these clearances being “still ongoing”.
Remembering that the insured capital contracted with Carris is 50 million euros, the insurer said that “the full settlement of the claim will be carried out in accordance with legal terms, with technical and human rigor, regardless of the time required to complete each process”.
In this context, Fidelidade created an independent technical committee to “ensure the specialized assessment of personal injuries and the validation of the respective compensation quantification, reinforcing transparency, equity and trust throughout the process”.
Carris’ position
In response to Lusa, the municipal company Carris, whose sole shareholder is the Lisbon City Council, said that it has established contacts with the victims and/or their families, in addition to the work being carried out by the insurance company Fidelidade.
