President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa accepted the Government’s proposal to appoint General João Cartaxo Alves as Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces. The announcement was published on the Presidency’s website, shortly before the inauguration ceremony, which took place at 7 pm.
The appointment of Lieutenant-General Sérgio Costa Pereira as Chief of Staff of the Air Force is also confirmed, as well as the reappointment of General Eduardo Mendes Ferrão as Chief of Staff of the Army for another two years.
The nominations had been approved by the government in the electronic Council of Ministers last Friday. A few weeks ago, DN had announced the news that the The Air Force returns to the top of the military hierarchy, something that has not happened since the mandate of General Luís Araújo, between 2011 and 2014.
By tradition, as the DN explained, the leadership of the EMGFA was alternated between the Branches, for three-year terms. However, in the last 12 years only the Navy and the Army have occupied the place.
General João Cartaxo Alves He took over as head of the Air Force in February 2022 and was reappointed in 2025. Born in Almada, he was commander of the Montijo Air Base and worked in the Air Force Operational Command.
Ascends to head of the General Staff of the Armed Forces at a time of strong reinforcement of investment in Defense, which will have R$5.8 billion to invest in modernizing and renovating equipment and human resources in the various sectors.
