Diário de Notícias was one of those distinguished at the ceremony that marked ten years of the White Cardan initiative promoted by the Portuguese Institute of Sports and Youth (IPDJ), held this Monday, in Lisbon.
Among several personalities and entities linked to national sport, the historic title of the Portuguese press stood out for being the only generalist newspaper to receive this distinction, in recognition of the role of the media in promoting ethical values in sport.
The honor was part of a broader set of awards given to sports and institutional agents who, over the last decade, have contributed to publicizing positive behaviors and combating the normalization of negative episodes often associated with competition. By distinguishing Diário de Notícias, as well as other sports media outlets, the IPDJ highlighted the importance of responsible journalism in building a sporting culture based on respect, integrity and fair play, giving visibility not only to results, but also to the examples that inspire athletes and the public.
Created by the National Sports Ethics Plan, the White Card emerged as a pedagogical tool aimed at valuing correct attitudes inside and outside competitions. Over ten years, the initiative was consolidated mainly in the youth categories, encouraging young practitioners to understand that competing involves rules, empathy and team spirit. Public recognition of exemplary behavior has, however, become a sign of pride for athletes, coaches and families.
