Carneiro demands that Montenegro clarify the use of the Lajes base in an attack on Iran

The secretary general of the PS defended that the prime minister must inform the country about the terms under which the use, by the United States of America, of the Lajes base, in the Azores, for the attack on Iran was authorized. Speaking to journalists in Braga this Monday, March 2, on the sidelines of a meeting with activists to present his re-candidacy for secretary general of the PS, José Luís Carneiroalso challenged the Government to explain how the Portuguese are being protected and will be repatriated if the conflict reaches more serious proportions.

“I understand that the prime minister must inform the country about the terms under which the use of the Lajes base was authorizedas, in fact, they certainly also heard the English Prime Minister explaining the terms in which England proposed a solution in support of the United States, the countries allied with the United States of America, to safeguard the terms in which the intervention is carried out”, he said.

For the socialist leader, Luís Montenegro must particularly inform parliament. “On Wednesday, there is a debate with the prime minister, a fortnightly debate, I myself intend to ask you the appropriate questions, so that you can inform the Portuguese people of the terms under which the use of the Lajes base was authorized.. The information we were given is that the authorization was granted under the agreement we have with the United States,” he added.

The socialist leader considered that parliament must carry out “due scrutiny” of the Government, which in turn must provide “the necessary public information to guarantee that the terms of its use occur within the scope of this same agreement”.
