And shooting occurred during the early hours of Sunday in Austin, Texas, left two dead and 14 injured in a bar on Sixth Street, in an incident that the FBI is investigating as a possible act of terrorism.
The aggressor shot with a gun from his SUV vehicle against people outside the bar and then continued on foot with a rifle until being shot down by the police.
Among the injured there are three who were seriously injured.
He shoots from his vehicle at people in a bar
The suspect, whose name was not immediately released, drove past the bar several times in his SUV before stopping and shoot a gun out the window against people in a patio and in front of the bar, said Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis.
Then he parked the vehicle, He got out with a rifle and started shooting at people walking in the area before being shot by officers who ran to the intersection, he added.
It should be noted that at least two other high-profile shootings have been reported in the Austin’s Sixth Street Entertainment District in the past five years, including one in the summer of 2021 that left 14 people injured.
Although this weekend’s shooting does not meet the definition of a mass murder, there have been five this year.
They investigate alleged act of terrorism in Austin
The FBI is investigating whether the incident was a act of terrorism due to evidence found on the armed man and in his vehicle, revealed Alex Doranacting special agent of the FBI’s San Antonio office.
“It’s still too early to make a determination on that,” he clarified.
The shooting occurred afuera de Buford’s Backyard Beer Garden shortly before 2 a.m. along Sixth Street, a nightlife destination filled with bars and music clubs.
The site is a few miles from the University of Texas, whose president declared on social media that some of those affected included “members from our university family”.
“Our prayers are with the victims and with all those affected,” said university leader Jim Davis.
Rapid response to the attack in Texas
The entertainment district has a strong police presence on weekends, and officers were able to confront the gunman within a minute of the first call for help, Davis said.
Austin Mayor Kirk Watson praised the quick response of police and rescuers.
“They definitely saved lives,” he said.
One of the victims was found on the street between two parked cars. Inside the multi-story bar there were tables overturned and drinks left behind by fleeing clients.
Cincinnati nightclub shooting
another shooting Early Sunday at a nightclub and concert venue in Cincinnati left nine people injured, police in Ohio reported.
All nine had gunshot wounds, but none were life-threatening, said Adam Hennie, the city’s acting police chief.
