Thousands protest in Lisbon and Porto against the ‘Work XXI’ labor package

Thousands of people took to the streets this Saturday in Lisbon and Porto to protest against the “Work XXI” labor package. The protesters, called by the CGTP, demand the immediate withdrawal of the Luís Montenegro Government’s proposal, classifying it as a regression in the rights of those who work.

In the capital, the route between Cais do Sodré and Rossio was filled by a human frame that, for just over an hour, chanted slogans such as “Just one more push and the package will fall to the ground” and “the public belongs to everyone, the private belongs to just a few”.

The demonstration was attended by the general secretary of the PCP, Paulo Raimundo, who joined the workers to reinforce political opposition to the project. Raimundo highlighted the need for a break with policies that “weaken collective bargaining” and expressed solidarity with the union struggle.

At his side, the general secretary of CGTP, Tiago Oliveira, reiterated that this package is “negative for the world of work” and accused the Government of having Chega and the Liberal Initiative as an “armed arm” to pursue this agenda. “We demand to discuss the improvement of living conditions with concrete proposals to change current legislation”, stated Oliveira.
