This Friday, February 27, the Government approved the appointment of João Cartaxo Alves for the position of Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces (CEMGFA), replacing General José Nunes da Fonseca, the appointment of Lieutenant-General Sérgio da Costa Pereira to the position of Chief of the Air Force General Staff and the extension of the mandate of the Army Chief of Staff, General Eduardo Mendes Ferrão. These proposals approved by the Council of Ministers must be confirmed by the President of the Republic and, if they have the green light, the mandates begin tomorrow, March 1st.
This confirms the hypothesis put forward by DN, two weeks ago, that the Air Force return to the top of the military hierarchy, something that has not happened since the mandate of General Luís Araújo, between 2011 and 2014.
By tradition, as the DN explained, the leadership of the EMGFA was alternated between the Branches, for three-year terms. However, in the last 12 years only the Navy and the Army have occupied the place.
