Mondego Irrigation Channel Ready on May 1st, Says Minister of the Environment

The Mondego irrigation channel, which will allow farmers to prepare their crops, should be ready on May 1st, if there are no unforeseen circumstances, guaranteed this Friday, February 27th, the Minister of Environment and Energy.

“We are going to build and start the Mondego irrigation channel right now so that farmers, on May 1st, can work and prepare all year round and all their crops, in this fertile agricultural region. There were quite a few here today [agricultores] who asked us for this”, revealed Maria da Graça Carvalho.

This morning, the Minister of Environment and Energy participated in the signing ceremony of the collaboration protocol between the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) and the Order of Engineers, to produce a technical report on floods in the Mondego Basin and review risk management models.

On the sidelines of the initiative, the government official explained that her Ministry has already made money available, from the Environmental Fund, for APA to execute the Mondego irrigation canal.

“APA has already confirmed to us today, here in public, that the work will be ready on May 1st. So, if there is no imponderable, I hope not, a big rain or a big storm that delays the work, the work will be ready”, he assured.

Maria da Graça Carvalho also highlighted that, alongside the farmers, who “will certainly be following the APA’s work, not letting anything delay”, she will also be paying attention so that “everything is ready on May 1st”.

Several storms have hit mainland Portugal since the end of January, the most violent being Depression Kristin, on January 28th.

The total or partial destruction of homes, businesses and equipment, the fall of trees and structures, the closure of roads, schools and transport services, and the cut of energy, water and communications, floods and floods are the main material consequences of the storm.
