António Costa highlights Insurance’s Europeanism and continuity with the EU

The president of the European Council, António Costa, said this Friday (27 February) that the president-elect, António José Seguro, is a “perpetual Europeanist” and expressed his conviction that he will preserve Portugal’s traditional relationship with the EU.

“From a European point of view, I have no doubts whatsoever: António José Seguro is a lifelong Europeanist. He was, in fact, an excellent deputy in the European Parliament, he always had a very strong commitment to Europe”, said António Costa in statements to journalists during a meeting with the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, at the European Council, in Brussels, after being asked if he thinks he will be as happy with Seguro as he was with Marcelo.

Costa also highlighted that Portugal has a “great characteristic that, regardless of governments, it has great continuity in its foreign policy and in its relationship with the European Union”.

“It has been like this since 1986 until now and it will certainly continue like this”, he said, highlighting that “all electoral results in Portugal demonstrate very strong support for pro-European forces”.

“Therefore, Portugal will certainly continue on this path. This is very important for Europe and it is also very important for Portugal”he stated.

Marcelo will cease his duties on March 9, the date on which the new President of the Republic, António José Seguro, will take office before the Assembly of the Republic.
