Consumer Confidence Falls in February, Economic Climate Shows Recovery

The consumer confidence indicator reversed the trend and decreased in February, while the economic climate indicator increased slightly, after falling in January, according to economic surveys released this Thursday, 26th, by the National Statistics Institute (IBGE).

According to INE, the consumer confidence indicator “decreased in February, after increasing in the previous two months”.

“The evolution observed in the reference month was the result of negative contributions from all components: perspectives on the future evolution of important purchases made by families, the country’s economic situation and, less significantly, opinions on past developments and expectations about the future evolution of the household’s financial situation”, he details.

The balance of consumer opinions about past price developments increased in January and February, after having decreased in the previous two months, and the balance of expectations about future price developments “increased considerably” between December and February, after the decreases recorded in the previous three months.

The economic climate indicator, based on surveys of companies, “increased weakly” in February, after decreasing in the previous month, with confidence increasing in services and the manufacturing industry and decreasing in commerce and construction and public works.

In services, the services confidence indicator increased in the month under review, with “significant positive contributions” from the perspectives regarding the evolution of demand and opinions on the order book.

The manufacturing industry indicator also rose, reflecting the “significant positive contribution” from production prospects.

On the contrary, the trade confidence indicator decreased in February, reflecting the negative contributions of opinions on sales volume and prospects for activity in the next three months.

In turn, in construction and public works the indicator decreased in the last month, reflecting the negative contribution of employment prospects.

INE also states that the balances of responses to businesspeople’s expectations about the future evolution of sales prices increased in services and decreased in industry, commerce and construction.
