The FBI carries out a search warrant at the home of Portuguese Alberto Carvalho, superintendent of schools in Los Angeles, and at the headquarters of the unified school district (LAUSD) where he works, according to the Associated Press.
Federal agents entered both locations on the morning of Wednesday, February 25, to execute warrants related to a judicial investigation, but the nature of the process or the allegations were not disclosed.
Alberto Carvalho, born in Lisbon, has been superintendent of Los Angeles schools since February 2022. It is the second largest school district in the country, covering more than half a million students.
Neither the school district nor Alberto Carvalho’s office have yet commented on the search warrants.
Carvalho stood out last year for positioning Los Angeles schools as safe places for children and parents regardless of their immigration status.
He himself spoke several times about his immigration journey, having arrived in the United States at the age of 17 and remaining in the country illegally after the expiration date of his visa. The Portuguese later achieved legal status and obtained North American citizenship. Before arriving in Los Angeles, Alberto Carvalho spent 14 years as superintendent of the Miami-Dade school district in Florida.
