Former soldier who threatened Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa is released

The man who was convicted of sending a letter with a bullet to the President of the Republic was released, according to SIC Notícias. According to this TV station, the Criminal Executions Court issued an immediate release order.

Former soldier Marco Aragão was serving a sentence for sending a letter to the Civil House threatening Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and demanding payment of one million euros. He had been detained by the Judiciary Police on suspicion of committing the crimes of aggravated coercion, attempted extortion and possession of a prohibited weapon for facts relating to October 26, 2022, when he sent the letter to the President of the Republic, “with death threats and attempted extortion, containing firearm ammunition inside”.

At the time, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, who was not in Belém, downplayed the incident and even mentioned that he received more threats when he was a television commentator. “Whoever walks this life and I’ve been walking for 30 years has this by the dozens (…). It happens, I don’t pay much attention”, he said.
