The Cascais City Council approved this Tuesday, February 24, the award of the rehabilitation work on the municipality’s sea wall, an investment of more than 16 million euros for an “intervention considered structuring for the sea front”, according to a statement from that entity.
“Today, at a chamber meeting, the award of the contract for the Structural Rehabilitation and Infrastructure of the Cascais Wall was unanimously approved at a chamber meeting, an intervention considered structuring for the sea front between Cascais and Azarujinha”says the note.
According to the Cascais Chamber’s statement, the work represents an investment “in excess of €16M” and foresees the structural reinforcement of the Cascais Wall, as well as its widening in more vulnerable sections, new accessibility, and the installation of lighting and video surveillance in the new structure.
Although the requalification was the responsibility of the central administration, being within the jurisdiction of the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA), the municipality decided to move forward with the investment, the note reads.
Because, according to the Mayor of Cascais, Nuno Piteira Lopes, “Cascais residents cannot continue to wait for the requalification of the sea wall, an emblematic space widely sought after by residents and visitors, whether for access to the beaches, walking, sports or simple moments of leisure along our coastline”.
“This intervention therefore assumes strategic importance not only due to the valorization of the territory it represents, but also due to its direct impact on people’s quality of life. Furthermore, the priority is to guarantee the safety of everyone who uses this space, preventing risks and ensuring adequate conditions for circulation and enjoyment”says Nuno Piteira Lopes, quoted in the statement.
The project, which “respects sustainability standards”, was developed over the last four years, during which time it was dependent on opinions and coordination with external entities, implying successive technical adjustments, he adds.
Concluding that, with this deliberation, the municipality moves towards carrying out work “considered a priority for the safety and quality of use of that public space”.
