Government admits searching people in “areas with social impact crime”

The government intends to expand proximity policing to “areas with socially impactful crime”, in which people can be identified and searched as part of preventing the use of weapons, according to a proposed law.

At issue is the proposed law that guides criminal policy for 2025-2027, approved on Friday by the Council of Ministers and then sent to the Assembly of the Republic, to be discussed and approved.

In the diploma, consulted this Monday, February 23, by Lusa, proximity policing and the prevention of the crime of detention and use of prohibited weapons remain among the priorities in relation to the Criminal Policy Law for 2023-2025, emerging a new concept of “zones with social impact crime”, which are not characterized in the document.

According to the proposal, “the security forces carry out, in particular, proximity policing, preventive patrolling and special police programs aimed at preventing crime” in these areas, on which, another article states, special prevention operations provided for in the Legal Regime of Weapons and Their Ammunition also “regularly focus”.

These last actions may “include the identification, search of people, vehicles or equipment and, if the legal requirements for this purpose are met, carrying out searches in the place where they are located”, determines the diploma.

Violent crime, domestic violence and corruption are some of the crimes that remain priorities in relation to the previous biennium, with the fight against hate, sabotage or attacks on critical infrastructure and the violation of sanctions imposed on Russia in the context of the invasion of Ukraine being the main news.
