Spanish cyclist Juan Ayuso (Lidl-Trek) won this Sunday, February 22, the 52nd edition of the Volta ao Algarve, succeeding the Danish Jonas Vingegaard, by winning the fifth and final stage, in Malhão.
Ayuso completed the 148.5 kilometers between Faro and the top of Malhão (Loulé) in 3:20.02 hours, surpassing the finish line by the Scotsman Oscar Onley (INEOS), second, and the Frenchman Paul Seixas (Decathlon), third, who set the same time, with the Portuguese João Almeida (UAE Emirates) in fourth, four seconds behind.
The Spaniard, who already started the race in the lead overall, finished the race with a total time of 15:51.12 hours, with the Frenchman Paul Seixas (Decathlon) finishing second, 14 seconds behind, and the Portuguese João Almeida (UAE Emirates) in third, 59 seconds away.
The Volta ao Algarve has not been won by a Spanish cyclist since 2010, the year in which Alberto Contador scored twice, working for Astana, repeating his 2009 success.
