The intervention that made it possible to temporarily recover the rupture of the Casais dike has been completedannounced the Government this Sunday, February 22nd. The damage caused by the floods was on the right bank of the Mondego River, in Coimbra, next to the A1 Motorway.
In a press release, the Ministry of Environment and Energy (MAE) informs that the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) developed an operation that allowed “temporarily restore the watertightness of the dike, preventing the passage of water from the central bed to the adjacent fields”. This intervention on the Mondego River “It will allow the drainage of land that is still flooded and is an essential step towards the definitive repair of the dike, the general conductor channel, and the road.”.
APA is also carrying out interventions on the banks of the Lis River, in the municipality of Leiria, which suffered a rupture in the dike on the left bank of the river, under the highway 17 viaductin the parish of Amor. The “situation that caused the diversion of part of the river flow to adjacent agricultural fields”.
This occurrence was the result of the extreme precipitation recorded on January 26th and 27th, associated with the Joseph and Kristin depressions that affected the Leiria region. MAE highlights that, in the following days, due to the high volume of accumulated water, “two more ruptures were recorded in the same dike, two kilometers downstream of the first occurrence, as well as a small breach in the tributary known as the Amor collector”.
According to the guardianship, the tributary known as the Aroeira collector also “suffered a collapse over an approximate length of 80 meters, causing the flooding of agricultural fields in the Monte Real area”. Ongoing repair work in these areas is expected to be completed within three weeks.
