Isaac Nader breaks national record for 800 meters on short track

This Sunday, February 22, Portuguese Isaac Nader broke the Portuguese record for the 800 meters on a short track, during the Copernicus Cup, in Torun, Poland, by completing his race in 1.45.05 minutes.

In great shape, Nader ran in Torun three days after winning the 1,500 meters in indoor de Liévin, in France, also with a national record.

Now, the mid-distance runner opted for a shorter distance, to fine-tune his speed on the track and did quite well, taking more than a second off the previous maximum, which had already been his for a year.

At the Expocentro pavilion, in Pombal, the Benfica athlete had scored 1.46.18, on February 23, 2025.

The 26-year-old from Algarve holds six national records: 800, 1,500 and 3,000 meters on a short track and 800, 1,500 miles on an outdoor track.

Nader, current outdoor 1,500 meter world champion, will return to running on the Torun track in March, where he will try to add the world title to his resume indoor.

Today’s race was won by the Belgian Eliott Crestan, in 1.44.07, ahead of the Poles Maciej Wyderka and Filip Ostrowski and the Jamaican Navasky Anderson.

The Copernicus Cup was also scheduled to feature Salomé Afonso, who was coming off a European record of 2,000 meters, done three days ago. However, the Portuguese long distance runner ended up not climbing the 1,500 meters, in which she was registered, as she had not fully recovered.
