WASHINGTON.- After a setback of the United States Supreme Courtthe president Donald Trump announced a global tariff of 10%.
The decision comes after this Friday morning, the Court determined that Trump’s tariffs, pushed under an emergency powers law, are illegal, and they were rescinded.
“Today I will sign an order to impose a global 10% tariff on top of the tariffs already charged”, reported the president.
Trump announces 10% tariff
In response to the Supreme Court ruling, nullifying his global tariffs, Trump announced a new one, now under the Section 122 of the Commerce Act of 1974.
This law grants the president the power to impose temporary import restrictions of up to 15%. However, these fees would be limited to only 150 days, unless legislatively extended.
Trump indicated that they are also exploring other tariff avenues, such as Section 232, which requires an investigation through the Department of Commerce.
“The good news is that there are methods, practices, statutes and authorities, recognized by the entire court in this terrible decision… that are even stronger than the IEEPA (International Emergency Economic Powers Act) rates.”.
The American assured that the Court’s ruling opened the door to go in “probably a direction that should have gone first.”
“Great certainty has been returned to the United States economy and, indeed, to the world economy.”
In addition, he insisted that he does not need the approval of Congress in the creation of the tariff policy when questioned about his lack of collaboration with legislators.
“I don’t have to do it […] I have the right to impose tariffs, and always have“.
Previously, the majority ruled that Congress has the power to write fiscal policy, which includes tariffs.
The Court’s decision was approved by a 6-3 vote and focused on the “reciprocal” tariffs imposed on almost all countries, as well as other tariffs decreed under the argument of a national emergency.
