The world is changing at an unprecedented speed. The international context is unstable. The foundations that supported us are giving way. Given this scenario, it is necessary to train professionals capable of understanding and participating in strengthening the European project, making the importance of careers in European institutions more evident.
Defense has once again become a priority, strengthening Europe’s economic muscle is the order of the day and strategic autonomy in vital areas – from energy to technology – has become central. In this context, higher education institutions have a fundamental role in developing skills so that young people can launch themselves into international careers, particularly in the European Union (EU).
Working in international contexts promotes autonomy, adaptability, critical thinking and civic awareness, bringing new professionals closer to European values.
In a global context marked by geopolitical, climatic and economic challenges, Portuguese universities have a strategic role in training professionals for careers in the EU, ensuring that the country participates in a qualified manner in decision-making processes, overcoming Portuguese under-representation in European institutions.
Choosing a professional career in the EU allows you to develop interpersonal skills, work with diversity and take on responsibilities in projects with a real impact on the lives of European citizens.
It is within this framework that the University of Coimbra develops a strategy to promote international careers, particularly in EU institutions, with the aim of informing, training and motivating students towards opportunities. Examples of this strategy are the EU Career Ambassadorswhich annually presents existing opportunities, as well as dissemination and support actions for preparation for competitions and internships. The objective is to bring students closer to European institutions and demonstrate that these careers are accessible.
At the same time, academic paths value international mobility and European experience, highlighting the need for highly qualified professionals, with solid technical skills, command of languages, ability to adapt to multicultural contexts and willingness to intervene in complex international environments.
Career opportunities in the EU cover areas such as social and legal sciences, economics, engineering, life sciences or environment. They include internships such as Blue Book at the European Commission and the Schuman in the European Parliament, as well as EPSO programs for access to permanent careers and roles in specialized European agencies. These opportunities provide qualified professional experiences and participation in teams and in decision-making processes and high-impact public policies.
These careers involve demanding challenges, with competitive selection processes that require specific preparation, language skills, critical reasoning and understanding of the EU’s institutional functioning. At this point, the role of the university is decisive, providing the necessary skills and confidence.
The University of Coimbra’s commitment to international and European careers constitutes a strategic investment in the future, preparing young graduates for a demanding and competitive global market, reinforcing Portugal’s role in the European context.
