Sites in Greenland targeted by cyberattacks allegedly linked to Russia

Several websites in Greenland are being targeted by cyberattacks, allegedly linked to Russian networks, Danish authorities confirmed this Friday, February 20th.

The Danish Agency for Citizens’ Safety did not detail which sites were affected, but, in a statement, said it was closely monitoring the situation, maintaining a constant dialogue with the competent authorities, both in Denmark and Greenland, reports Lusa, which cites the Danish public broadcaster DR.

The cyber attacks would have occurred on the day that King Frederick was making an official visit to Greenland, and at the same time NATO exercises were taking place as part of Operation Arctic Sentinel, with a view to strengthening the military presence in the Arctic and the High North.

The cyber attacks are, according to DR, of the distributed denial of service (DDoS) type, and were attributed to the group of hackers Russian NoName 057 (16), with links to multiple actions against NATO countries.

Greenland’s public broadcaster, KNR, says that this is the same group of hackers which was behind the attacks on the websites of Danish municipalities and ministries during the municipal elections in November last year.

According to the government of the autonomous territory, these attacks do not pose a risk to sensitive data, as they involve actions that only temporarily interrupt access to websites.

“Cyberattacks only interrupt the availability of certain websites for short periods of time. In most cases, the attack can be remedied in a short time and without serious consequences”, said the Greenlandic Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
