The accusation of racism made by Brazilian player Vinicius Jr in Real Madrid’s match against Benfica in Lisbon, it expanded the campaign of the Joint Action Group against Racism and Xenophobia (GAC) to criminalize racism in Portugal.
The group is made up of a series of entities that want to discuss in parliament a proposal to amend the Penal Code to make the practice of racism an independent crime in the country. Currently, racist acts and offenses only generate administrative punishments or fines. Furthermore, there are few convictions. According to the 2022 report of the Commission for Equality and Against Racial Discrimination (CICDR), of 97 cases opened that year, only 11 resulted in convictions.

Casa do Brasil in Lisbon is one of the entities to join the GAC. The president, Ana Paula Costa, explains on Radar DN Brasil that the petition was delivered to parliament last year, but some signatures were invalidated due to the lack of complete data from the petitioners. “There was a deficit of around seven thousand signatures and now it is back for collection”, says Ana Paula.
Who can sign? “All people with Portuguese nationality and Brazilian people with equal political rights status”, explains the president of the CBL.
Radar DN Brasil airs every Friday, at 8am, on the DN Brasil channels on YouTube and Spotify, with an overview of the week and everything that interests Brazilians in Portugal.
