Tejo Energia announced this Thursday, 19th, that it will begin in March the demolition of the old Pego coal-fired thermoelectric plant, in Abrantes, in a process scheduled for three years, marking a new phase of reconversion of the industrial complex.
In a statement, the company explained that “the intervention will aim to restore the land to its basic conditions, ensuring its return in full safety and environmental compliance”, adding that the existing railway branch and road-rail bridge will not be subject to any intervention.
The cooling towers, 116 meters high, and the chimney, 225 meters high, will be demolished in the final phase of the project through the controlled use of explosives.
According to the company, during peak work, the operation could involve around 80 workers.
“This phase will represent a temporary positive impact on the local economy, particularly in the accommodation, catering, commerce and services sectors of the region” centered in Abrantes, in the district of Santarém, highlights the statement.
Tejo Energia highlights that “this highly technical operation will be carried out by specialized and certified teams, strictly complying with the highest standards of safety, engineering and environmental protection, in close coordination with the competent authorities”.
The statement states that materials management will follow “best international practices, favoring the reuse of equipment, the recycling of concrete for leveling operations, the separation and reuse of metallic materials and the minimization of waste sent to landfill”.
