Former German coach Sepp Piontek, who as coach laid the foundations of the Denmark national team between 1979 and 1990, died this Thursday, February 19, at the age of 85, the Danish Federation said.
“It is with great sadness that we receive the news of the death of former national coach Sepp Piontek”, announced the Danish Football Federation on its account on the social network a team that had stars such as Morten Olsen, Soren Lerby, Frank Arnesen, Jan Molby, Allan Simonsen, Elkjaer Larsen and Michael Laudrup, among others.
As a footballer, Piontek was a defender who represented Werder Bremen for 12 seasons, making six appearances for the German national team. It was at the historic Bremen club where he began his coaching career in 1971/72, then spent time at Fortuna Düsseldorf, the Haitian national team and St. Pauli, before taking on the role of Denmark coach in 1979, where he laid the foundations of a team that became known as Danish Dynamite. In 1990 he was appointed coach of Türkiye, and then returned to coach clubs such as Bursaspor, AB, Aalborg and Silkeborg, ending his career as coach of Greenland in 2002.
