The general secretary of the PS, José Luís Carneiro, formalized this Wednesday, February 18, his candidacy for a new term at the head of the party in a letter in which he pledges to reaffirm the socialists “as the only credible alternative to govern Portugal”.
“I am a candidate for general secretary of the Socialist Party because I believe that this is the time to reaffirm the PS as the only credible alternative to govern Portugal”writes José Luís Carneiro in a letter to the socialists published on the official website of his candidacy for the PS elections, scheduled for March 13th and 14th.
The PS leader, whose re-candidacy had already been confirmed in January, moves forward with “democratic humility to meet people and know how to listen to them” e “with the ability to provide answers to your real problems”defending “a progressive, humanist and moderate party, a common home for Democrats”.
The PS, he says, must be a political force “capable of mobilizing everyone to offer the Portuguese a better life and new hope” and “with concrete solutions to resolve the problems that most afflict the Portuguese, such as health, housing, the appreciation of pensions and wages, the quality of employment”.
“A party that knows that extremism can be defeated with dialogue and tolerance, but also with truth and firmness of convictions and political action. With the effective resolution of people’s problems”he adds.
Carneiro assures that he wants to “continue listening and give people a voice” and “create an environment where each person feels recognized, valued and free to share their experience”, emphasizing that “listening is not just collecting opinions, but also understanding needs, expectations and challenges”.
The general secretary and candidate for the leadership of the PS calls for the participation of all activists “in choosing strategic priorities for the country and the different regions” and says he has the ambition to present a political program “capable of responding to the effective needs and ambitions of people”.
“This is the path that I want us to take together and to which I call on all socialists, progressives, humanists and all democrats. I count on each one of you. It’s time to give everyone a voice. Because we count on everyone”, he concludes.
On January 24, the PS National Commission approved the scheduling of direct elections for the position of general secretary for March 13 and 14 and the XXV National Congress for March 27, 28 and 29, in Viseu. The deadline for submitting candidatures for general secretary ends on February 26th.
Also on January 24, the president of the PS stated that he was not aware that “there is any other candidacy being proposed” to compete against José Luís Carneiro for the leadership of the PS, adding that the current secretary general is the “strongest” and most accepted name.
