Social network X suffers second blackout of the day in several countries including Portugal

The social network X suffered a second interruption this Monday, February 16, in several countries, including Portugal and the United States, for reasons still unknown.

After a first failure at 1:30 pm, which took an hour to resolve, around five hours later users of the social network returned to report problems with the service to the Downdetector website, both on the cell phone application and on the web version, according to reports sent.

This Monday, Downdetector presents a record of users who indicate potential problems with X in the main Portuguese cities.

The social network had registered a first blackout in Portugal at 1:38 pm, with Downdetector recording more than 700 notifications of the failure.

The service took an hour to be reestablished, but at 6:23 pm a new peak in notifications was recorded, almost 430, according to Downdetector, whose data shows that the second failure would have been shorter, with no complaints of service failure since around 6:50 pm.

Downdetector is an online platform that provides real-time information about the status of various websites and digital services, such as social networks, banks and internet operators.

Managed by the company Ookla, the service works by collecting and analyzing user reports directly, on social networks and by detecting anomalies.

When accessing the social network and trying to refresh the page, X displayed a message stating that “posts are not currently loading” and asked users to try again, although this did not work.

So far, the social network X, formerly known as Twitter, has not commented on these possible technical problems with its platform.

This new service failure occurred exactly one month after the same incident in a previous outage reported on January 16, in which the X servers were unresponsive, displaying error message 522.

According to DataReportal, which is based on figures published in X’s advertising materials, the network had 1.74 million users in Portugal at the end of 2025.

The same source says that the potential reach of X ads in Portugal decreased by 225 thousand (-11.4%) between the end of 2024 and the end of 2025.
