The president of the United States announced this Sunday that the members of the Peace Council will allocate 5,000 million dollars (about 4.2 billion euros) for the reconstruction of Gaza and called for a “complete and immediate” demilitarization of Hamas.
According to a post by Donald Trump on the Truth Social platform, the formal announcement will take place at the first meeting of the organization, founded and chaired by the US president, scheduled for next week at the Washington Institute of Peace, recently renamed after the Republican.
“On February 19, 2026, I will again be joined by members of the Peace Council at the Donald J. Trump Institute for Peace in Washington, DC, where we will announce that Member States pledge more than $5 billion [4.212 milhões de euros ao câmbio atual] for humanitarian and reconstruction efforts in Gaza,” he wrote.
Trump insisted that “It is very important that Hamas fulfills its commitment to complete and immediate demilitarization.”
The new international organization, whose charter was signed by Trump on January 22 of this year, had a founding meeting at that time in Davos, Switzerland, with at least 35 heads of state and government, including those from Israel, Argentina, Saudi Arabia and Egypt.
Most of the founders are Trump allies, while major powers and almost all European countries have shown reluctance to join, considering that the Council weakens the United Nations (UN).
Israel and Hamas agreed to a ceasefire in October, as part of the peace plan promoted by the United States for the region, but since then there have been several violations of the agreement.
Bombings in Gaza last night killed ten people, the Ministry of Health of the Hamas government in the Gaza Strip reported this Sunday, which counts more than 600 inhabitants killed in Israeli attacks since the ceasefire came into force on October 10.
Since the start of the Israeli military offensive in 2023, at least 72,060 inhabitants have died in Gaza, including more than 20,000 children, according to the Ministry of Health.
