The United States’ new security strategy, which proclaims that the American continent is the “property” of the United States, is going as far as anyone can or can go forward. The Northern Power, proclaimed since Donald Trump’s position in 2025 and explicitly expressed in the announcement of the New National Security Doctrine published last December, intends to make the Western Hemisphere desire to “deny non-hemispheric competitors” control of “strategically vital activities” and expel foreign companies that build infrastructure in America and establish dominance in the region. It’s not just amenazes. Venezuela has been under attack for the past 3 years with an agent linked to the assassination of multiple people and the kidnapping of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores.
Now the threats are focused on Cuba, where the goal is to choke off the elemental back end of the energy supply. The executive order signed by Trump imposing an embargo on nations that sell and supply oil to Cuba has had serious humanitarian consequences for the Cuban people, a society that throughout its history has denied the right to independence. After some time as a Spanish colony, Cuba remained a virtual protectorate of the United States until the 1959 revolution started by Fidel Castro and a revolutionary movement that overthrew the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista.
The new revolutionary government initially made no pretense of seeking help from the communist bloc led by the Soviet Union. It was the US aggression, invasion and blockade that drove the Cuban government to radicalize and preach US anti-imperialism. However, for more than six decades, Cuba has not been able to fully assert its sovereignty and independence due to economic blockade, espionage and political alienation. The current pressure that the Trump administration is putting on this nation will likely end up silencing the current government due to the lack of energy and basic needs for the people of the main Caribbean island. An example of this presión rebotó in Mexico, when the government of President Claudio Sheinbaum accused Donald Trump of receiving oranges and suspended oil trade in Cuba.
But between Cuba, let’s ask ourselves what to do next. For now, the United States government holding Donald Trump is presiding over the government of Panama to ensure that the country terminates the agreements and contracts that the country has entered into with a Chinese company (based in Hong Kong) that manages the two ports of entry to the Panama Canal. At one time, this country’s court, which was considered a real violation of the United States in the alleged states of Panama, declared unconstitutional contracts with CK Hutchison, which operates ports around the world under its Hutchison Ports division in the Panama Canal.
The United States’ imperial strategy to reassert its dominance throughout Latin America aims to eliminate and avoid China’s presence. Another example of this is the threats launched by the State Department through its Western Hemisphere office about China’s presence at the port of Chancay in Peru. Inaugurated in November 2024 by former Peruvian President Dina Boluarte and Chinese President Xi Jinping, Chancay Port is owned by Cosco Shipping Ports Chancay Peru with a turnover of 60-100 from China and 40-100 from Peru. Last week, the State Department’s Western Hemisphere Office of Asuntos posted: “We are concerned by the latest information indicating that Peru may not be able to oversee Chancay, one of its most important ports, under the jurisdiction of predatory owners. We support Peru’s right to oversee critical infrastructure on its territory.”
It is a hypocritical idea because it challenges the sovereignty of Latin American nations when they legally and legitimately enter into agreements and negotiations with other nations such as China, but do not challenge the imperialist declaration that the entire Western Hemisphere is owned by the United States. A demand for imperial confirmation that has an impact on the oppression of all Latin American countries.
So far, the Trump administration is trying to support a bloc of conservative-leaning Latin American governments that have made it their mission to contribute to the government and North American companies. The Trump administration announced a meeting in Florida on March 7 with the presidents of Argentina, Javier Milea; Santiago Peña of Paraguay; Rodrigo Paz of Bolivia; Nayib Bukele from El Salvador; Daniel Noboa of Ecuador; y Tito Asfura, newly elected president of Honduras.
Neither the rest of the countries in the region oppose nor stop the US imperial assertion under the Trump administration. I am only ashamed of the proclamation of freedom and cooperation.
This allows the United States government, President Trump, to act as an imperial tyrant, imposing its interests and desires on all countries in the region through peace and force. If Latin American societies do not move to prevent this, we will move towards another great colonialist cycle in our countries.
