The improvement in the weather is leading to a less rapid reduction in flood situations in the most affected areas, with landslides deserving special concern from the authorities, according to the national commander of Civil Protection.
The state of play on the response to the hydro-meteorological situation in the country until 12pm this Sunday, February 15th, presented by Mário Silvestre at the headquarters of the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC) in Carnaxide, Oeiras, points to “a worsening of situations” resulting from the meteorological situation, characterized by “periods of rain or showers, more frequent in Minho and Douro Litoral”.
The authorities, however, maintain a surveillance situation on the rivers Mondego, Tagus, Sorraia, Sado, Minho, Coura, Lima, Cávado, Ave, Douro, Tâmega, Sousa, Vouga, Águeda, Lis, Nabão and Guadiana, with the Special Emergency Plan for Tagus Basin Floods activated and at a red level.
Mário Silvestre warned the risks of landslides, which have displaced many populations, and which can even occur in lands that have already suffered these landslides.
Therefore, he reinforced the authorities’ recommendations for people to stay away from risk areas and to report any cracks they identify in the ground, as well as falling trees or landslides.
Remembering that there are still 123 active municipal emergency plans in the countryMário Silvestre explained that on the Mondego River the flows are being regulated to try to ensure that there is no longer any compromise to the population due to the issue of the dike breaking.
On Wednesday, the rupture of one of the Mondego River dikes near Coimbra caused the collapse of a segment of the A1.
