Pope Leo XIV prays for the victims and those affected by the cyclones in Madagascar

VATICAN CITY.- This Sunday, the Pope Leo XIV showed its proximity to the populations of Madagascar seriously affected by the successive impact of two cyclones that caused ifloods and landslides on the African island.

“I am close to the populations of Madagascar affected in a short time by two cyclones with floods and landslides,” said the pontiff after praying the Sunday Angelus from the Apostolic Palace.

He also added that he prays “for the victims, their families and for all those who have suffered serious harm.”

At least 40 people died in Madagascar after the arrival of tropical cyclone Gezani in Madagascar on Tuesday, according to the National Risk and Disaster Management Office (BNGRC).

Up to 269,407 people were affected, and 16,318 are displaced as a result of gusts of up to 250 kilometers per hour.

The pontiff’s agenda continues this afternoon with a visit to the outskirts of Rome.

Leo XIV will go to the parish of Santa Maria Regina Pacis, in Ostia, where he will celebrate a mass at 5:00 p.m. local time (4:00 p.m. GMT).
