The US Secretary of State defended this Saturday, February 14, that the UN “plays no role” in resolving conflicts and that the United States, under the leadership of President Donald Trump, is ready to lead “the restoration” of world order.
Marco Rubio, who was speaking at the Munich Security Conference, which began on Friday and runs until Sunday, stressed that the United States wants a Europe that “is strong” and that the two parties are destined to “be together”.
“We want Europe to be strong. We believe Europe can survive. The two parties exist to be together,” Rubio said at the 62nd edition of the conference, considered the world’s main meeting of security policy experts.
At the conference in Munich, in southern Germany, attended by more than 60 world leaders and around 100 foreign and defense ministers, Rubio highlighted that the United States “will always be a child of Europe”.
“We want Europe to be strong, we believe Europe can survive. We don’t want weak allies, because that weakens us. We want allies capable of defending themselves so that no adversary is ever tempted to test our collective strength”, declared Rubio, at a time when Trump recently stated that the continent is threatened with a “civilizational erasure”.
Regarding the United Nations, the US Secretary of State stressed that the organization led by Portuguese António Guterres played “practically no role” in resolving conflicts and called for a reform of global institutions.
“The United Nations continues to have enormous potential to be an instrument at the service of good in the world. But we cannot ignore that, today, in the most urgent issues we face, they have no answers and played virtually no role. They were unable to resolve the war in Gaza,” he said, at a time when Trump created a “Peace Council” designed to help resolve conflicts.
In his intervention, made a year after an impassioned speech by the North American vice-president, JD Vance, against the ‘old continent’, Rubio said the United States is not seeking to “divide” but rather to “revitalize” the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
“And although we are prepared, if necessary, to act alone, we prefer and hope to act with you, our friends here in Europe”, added the head of North American diplomacy.
For Rubio, the United States will be “guided by the vision of a future as proud, sovereign and vital as our civilization’s past.”
“[Washington] does not seek to divide but rather to revitalize the Atlantic alliance between the United States and Europe.”Rubio added, in a message of appeasement addressed to European leaders.
“We do not seek to divide, but to revitalize an old friendship and renew the greatest civilization in the history of humanity. What we want is a reinvigorated alliance,” he said.
Regarding the conflict triggered by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which began in February 2022, Rubio said he “does not know” whether Moscow is serious when it says it wants to end the war in Ukraine.
“We don’t know if the Russians are serious in their desire to end the war,” admitted Rubio, when a new round of negotiations between the parties is scheduled for next week in Geneva, mediated by the United States, which has been pressuring Moscow and Kiev to quickly sign a peace agreement.
