UK sends naval air force to North Atlantic to deter Russia

The United Kingdom will deploy a naval air contingent to the North Atlantic and Far North, as part of a security mission designed to respond to Russian military activity. The announcement was made this Saturday (14) by British Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, during the Munich Security Conference, in Germany.

Starmer classified the deployment as a “strong demonstrationof the UK’s commitmentwith Euro-Atlantic security”, highlighting that the operation will be carried out “alongside the United States, Canada and other NATO allies”.

In a statement, the British Ministry of Defense specified that the contingent will include “Royal Navy warships, F-35 planes and helicopters“. According to the guardianship, this mobilization “will help prepare Britain for combat, increase our contribution to NATO and strengthen our operations with key allies”.

The ministry added that the main objective is “deter Russian aggression and protect vital underwater infrastructure”, warning that “In the last two years, the number of Russian ships threatening British waters has increased by 30%”.

According to the AFP agency, France is also expected to deploy its naval air group to the same region this year, reinforcing the allied presence.

The North Atlantic is considered strategic because it is the main passage area for Russian submarines from the Northern and Baltic fleets, through the corridor between Greenland and the United Kingdom, an area under permanent surveillance by NATO allies.
