Urgent Support for Almada in Landslide Crisis

The PS leader appealed this Friday, February 13, to the Government not to leave the mayor of Almada alone, asking her to send a multidisciplinary team to Porto Brandão, where an evacuation action is being carried out due to the landslide.

“What is happening here is very serious, it is something that especially touches us and the Government has a duty not to leave a mayor alone with a drama of this nature”, José Luís Carneiro told journalists after visiting the Porto Brandão area, Almada, where residents, who were already evacuated on Wednesday due to the risk of the landslide, are removing some of their things from home.

The PS general secretary warned that these people “will lose their homes” and considered that “only an insensitive Government can leave a Mayor alone in a situation of this nature”, with the socialist Inês de Medeiros at his side.

“The people who are stressed, the president of the Parish Council, the mayor, the people who are experiencing this personal drama, families who feel literally abandoned and so my appeal is an appeal to the Government to place a team here that has people from Psychology, Social Security, Infrastructure, Housing”, he asked.

This multidisciplinary team, according to Carneiro, would serve to “guarantee these people that their future does not have the degree of uncertainty that they fear today”.

“It is an appeal that I make to the Government, in a very sensitive way because what is happening here is very serious. It is an appeal to those who have responsibilities in the country not to leave these people abandoned”, he reiterated.

The town of Porto Brandão, in the municipality of Almada, district of Setúbal, was preventively evacuated, on Wednesday, due to the risk of landslides on the cliffs, following the bad weather.
