French police shot a knife-wielding man under the Arc de Triomphe on Friday after he threatened gendarmes at the famous Parisian monument, a police source reported.

The suspect, who threatened the gendarmes present at the scene for the ceremony to re-light the flame at the tomb of the unknown soldier, was hospitalized after being shot several times, the source added.

The national anti-terrorist prosecutor’s office announced that it took charge of the case and opened an investigation.

The man, who lives in a suburb north of Paris, was on the authorities’ radar, said a source close to the case who requested anonymity.

According to the gendarmerie, the aggressor slightly injured one of the officers who were part of the honor guard with the knife.

Later, another gendarme opened fire on the attacker at the Arc de Triomphe.
